In 1926 the modernist Russian poet, Vladimir Mayakovsky published a small yet significant meditation on poetry called How Are Verses Made?

In this book he wrote, “Rhythm is the fundamental force, the fundamental energy of verse.” This is a transcription of that excerpt. The patterns of graphite and coloring pencil that unify both text and textile, the written and the sewn, mark rhythmic shifts.
